 Mr.
Rowland is a product of the Wise County School
System, having graduated from Coeburn High
School in 1968. He received a Bachelor’s Degree
in Physical Education with a minor in Science
from The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina
in 1972. In 1976, he earned a Master’s Degree
in Administration and Supervision from The
University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Mr.
Rowland began his professional career in 1972 as
a science teacher and coach at John I. Burton
High School. He then became a science teacher
and coach at Coeburn High School in 1973. Mr.
Rowland taught for seven years and left
education in 1980 to become the Coal Preparation
Plant Manager for Pittston Coal Company. During
his absence from the education field, Mr.
Rowland also held the position of Human Resource
Manager for Davis Mining and Manufacturing. In
1999, he returned to the public school system
and became assistant principal at Powell Valley
High School and later, in 2001, he was named the
principal of Powell Valley High School. In
2005, Mr. Rowland was appointed as the Director
of Secondary Education for Wise County Schools.
In 2009, he assumed the position of Director of
Human Resources.
