Even if you have already scheduled your classes, this is an opportunity for you and your family to learn more about MECC...

Students attending a session will likely be on campus for three to four hours. Students will be provided with an excuse to verify that they were attending freshman orientation at MECC.

Mountain Empire Community College AIMS Scholarship: This scholarship is a two year scholarship (or up to 72 credit hours) through Mountain Empire Community College that allows qualifying students to attend college tuition free and without fees for two years at M.E.C.C. if they: 1. Earn a C or better in 17 academic courses including :4 credits of English, 4 credits of mathematics (Algebra I plus 3 additional higher math classes up through Math Analysis or Pre-calculus I), 3 credits of science (Earth, Biology, Chemistry, or Physics), 3 credits of social studies/history, 2 credits of a single foreign language or technical track courses, 1 computer related course, 2. Complete 20 hours of community service, 3. Have a 95% attendance rate for their high school career- grades 9-12, 4. And have no out-of-school suspensions. If students meet all of these qualifications, then they will be recognized as an AIMS scholar at awards ceremonies and at our graduation in addition to the two year scholarship. Students will be expected to pay for their own books always. If any scholarships are earned, those will be applied first and then AIMS funds will pick up the remaining tuition/fees but students will still be responsible for books. Students must stay full time while in college and maintain a 2.0 average GPA to continue to qualify. This scholarship may also continue for up to two additional years at UVA-Wise tuition free in order to earn a Bachelors Degree at the completion of the two years or 72 credit hours at M.E.C.C. They will be under the same requirements to continue to be eligible at UVA-Wise and must always pay for their books and fees. Seniors that score less than 500 on the critical reading or math portion of the SAT I Reasoning test for college admissions may want to consider retaking the test for higher scores to ensure admission to the institution of their choosing especially the larger universities and to also become eligible for more academic scholarship money (which is often based on their SAT score and cumulative GPA).  (9/21/10)

Register for Selective Service: All 18 year old males must register for the selective service in order to apply for financial aid for college.  You may do so at this website: www.sss.gov  If you have not done so, you may not submit the free application for federal student aid (FAFSA) which is  available in January of each year. Each college and university has their own internal scholarship applications which should be filled out after they have applied and are admitted.  This allows students to apply for many internal scholarships that are only available when attending that specific institution.  Most college's general scholarship forms are available on the college's website just as their application forms are.  (9/21/10)

 Virginia Athletic Trainers Association Scholarship: Seniors that apply, get accepted to, and plan to attend a college or university that has an undergraduate curriculum program in Athletic Training as approved by the NATA and have an intent to continue educational preparation toward becoming a Certified Athletic Trainer.  Ford C. Quillen Scholarship: Each year, a Lee, Scott, and Wise Count/City of Norton graduating senior will be selected for a $500 Ford C. Quillen Scholarship. To be eligible, the graduating senior must be planning to enroll full-time in an undergraduate program at Mountain Empire Community College or the University of Virginia's College at Wise.  Wise County Chamber of Commerce -Cheryl Richardson Memorial Scholarship: This scholarship will be awarded to a resident of Wise County or the City of Norton who is a senior graduating from a high school located in Wise County or the City of Norton and is applying to either The University of Virginia's College at Wise or Mountain Empire Community College as a full-time student.  The guidelines are listed as: Student must have at least a 3.3 GPA, and a combined SAT of 1425 or ACT composite score of 19, and it will not be limited to students with financial need.  See Mrs. Phillips for applications and list of additional required documents, which must be submitted to the Wise County Chamber of Commerce by April 1, 2011.  The Southwest Virginia EMS Council Scholarship: The Council will award one $1,000 scholarship to a high school senior who is a member of a licensed Emergency Medical Services agency as part of their 2011 Regional EMS competition. The winner will also then be able to compete for the 2011 Governor's EMS Award of $5,000. Visit www.southwest.vaems.org to download and print a packet or call LeAnn Atwell at (276)628-4151.  Capo's Scholar's Award- Music Scholarship: Capo's Music Store in Abingdon is sponsoring a $250 scholarship competition which will be awarded to one senior who: Is enrolled in high school this academic year; who has a minimum GPA of 2.0; plans to attend an accredited college or university through graduation; and is from one of the southwest Virginia counties which includes Wise County.  The Lacy and Mattie Meador Scholarship: This scholarship is now available in the counseling office. Please see Mrs. Phillips for an application. Deadline is March 2nd.

 The Virginia Sheriff's Institute Scholarship:  This scholarship is for those students interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement or criminal justice. Please see Mrs. Phillips for an application. Deadline is May, 1.

 The Greever Crouse Memorial Scholarship: This scholarship is awarded annually to one first-year male and one first-year female student who will pursue a post-secondary degree.  The award is in the amount of $750 for one year. Recipients must possess the qualities of leadership, citizenship, sportsmanship, scholarship, and they must show academic promise, financial  need, and must participate in VHSL events. Our school must nominate one female and one male to compete.  If you wish to be considered for nomination from the Scholarship Committee, please see Mrs. Phillips or Mr. Akridge  The nominees must write an essay and obtain a letter of recommendation in addition to the application which all must be submitted by the March 31, 2011 deadline.  History Essay Contest for College Scholarship from The Society of the Cincinnati in the State of Virginia: This essay scholarship is for high school seniors who plan to attend any four-year college in Virginia. Essays must be on a specified topic and at least 1,500 words in length. See Mrs. Phillips for rules, information, and applications. There will be four $3,000 scholarships awarded.  Virginia Association of Women Judges Scholarship Award: This is an essay contest for seniors that plan to attend college. See Mrs. Phillips for rules, information, applications, and the specified essay topic. There will be one $500 award presented. The deadline is March 15, 2011. (1/19/11)

 Best Buy Scholarship Program: Students in grades 9-12 interested in attending college may apply for these scholarships at www.at15.com . Students should have "solid grades plus community service or work experience."

 2010-2011 National Co-op Scholarship: To qualify for this scholarship, students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better, complete all required admissions applications material and be accepted for the 2011-2012 academic year at one of the following National Commission Partner Institutions: Drexel University, Johnson & Wales University, Kettering University, Rochester Institute of Technology, University of Cincinnati, University of Toledo, or Wentworth Institute of Technology.  KFC Colonel's Scholars: looking for high school seniors with financial need and an entrepreneurial spirit. To qualify, graduating high school seniors must earn a minimum high school cumulative GPA of 2.75, enroll in a public college or university within their state of legal residence, plan to pursue a bachelor's degree, be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, and demonstrate financial need.  The 20010-11 Lee-Jackson Educational Foundation Scholarship Program: 27 scholarships are available to qualifying students that submit outstanding analytical essays  on any aspect--positive or negative--of the career, character, or legacy of General Robert E. Lee and/or General "Stonewall" Jackson. Any juniors or seniors that are: A Virginia resident, that plan to attend a four-year accredited U.S. college, and later enroll as a full time student may apply for this essay scholarship.  American Fire Sprinkler Association Scholarship Contest: The AFSA is sponsoring a scholarship contest for high school seniors. Students could receive Virginia prizes of $1500 for 1st place, $750 for 2nd place, and $500 for 3rd place.  The requirement is to write a 700 to 1000 word essay on the following subject: Write a creative, interesting, and convincing essay on the history of automatic fire sprinklers and why they are important. Requirements for submission are a completed application form and the essay. All essays must have a bibliography. Applications can be found at http://www.firesprinkler.org .  Big Sun Scholarship: The Big Sun Organization is proud to be able to continue to help young athletes succeed in their academic pursuits. We are offering an annual scholarship of $500 to a deserving student. All student athletes are eligible for this award, regardless of which sport they are participating in.  VSGA Scholarship Program of the Virginia Golf Foundation: The VGSA Scholarship Program of the Virginia Gold Foundation was founded to help young Virginians with an interest in golf planning to attend colleges and universities within the Commonwealth of Virginia. Eligibility for 2011 scholarships: 1) Any Virginia high school senior in good standing who has been domiciled in Virginia since September 1, 2010 and 2) Candidates must be in good academic standing at any high school or equivalent level institution acceptable to the Virginia Golf Foundation. Consideration for a scholarship is based on the following criteria: 1) does candidate play golf or have any interest in an activity associated with golf, 2) Candidate's academic achievement, 3) Candidates character, 4) Essay to the VGF, 5) Financial need. The Gloria Wille Bell and Carlos R. Bell Charitable Trust Scholarship: This scholarship program provides scholarship support up to $80,000 over four undergraduate years to selected students from the Commonwealth of Virginia (with a preference given to residents of the Gloucester, Virginia area) that are pursuing degrees at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan in the careers of engineering, mathematics, physics, computer science, or another related scientific field. Interested students may be eligible for a paid overnight trip to visit the campus. The trip will include airfare for the student and one parent/guardian and hotel for one night. All applications must be submitted completely online including essays, please visit http://www.bellscholarship.org  for applications and information. Students must be enrolled at the university in one of the degree areas listed above to receive the scholarship and continued scholarship support is contingent upon satisfactory academic progress.   • Access UVa Scholarships for Low-Income Students and for those for underrepresented areas: Any student that qualify for free-reduced lunch and plans to apply and/or attend UVA at Charlottesville, should see Mr. Akridge for nomination for scholarships.

 

  • University Achievement Award: Scholarship for exceptional in-state students that are diverse and show academic merit and promise. All students are considered for this when accepted, no separate application is required

 

  • Engineering Scholarship: Students that are accepted and interested in the field of Engineering will be automatically considered for this. for for information visit www.seas.virginia.edu/diversity/ .

Alpha Natural Resources Sons & Daughters Scholarship Program: To be eligible, you must be a: Dependent (up to the age of 20 years) of active full-time employees of Alpha Natural Resources; be a high school senior who plans to enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited two-year or four-year college or university; and must complete high school in the academic year that the application is made. $1,500 scholarships will be awarded each year.  Scholarships are renewable contingent upon maintaining a 2.5 GPA and continuation of the college program. Recipients are selected on the basis of academic record, demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities, honors, work experience, statement of goals and aspiration, unusual personal or family circumstances, and an outside appraisal.  Applications may be picked up from Mrs. Phillips in the counseling office.  Alpha Natural Resources Engineering Scholarship Program: To be eligible, you must be a: High school senior that plans to enroll in a full-time undergraduate engineering program at an accredited four-year college or university in one of the following engineering disciplines: Mining, Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical and must graduate from high school this academic school year.  $2,500 scholarships will awarded each year. Scholarships are renewable contingent upon maintaining a 2.5 GPA and continuation of the college program. Recipients are selected on the basis of academic record, demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities, honors, work experience, statement of goals and aspiration, unusual personal or family circumstances, and an outside appraisal.  Create A Greeting Card $10,000 Annual Scholarship: Students must submit a unique photo, piece of artwork, or computer graphic for the front of a greeting card. The student who creates the best greeting card will win a $10,000 scholarship and have his/her design made into an actual card and sold in the card line. Additionally, this year they are also giving a $1,000 award to the school of the scholarship winner.  Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation Scholarships: There will be four year renewable scholarships awarded to 250 high school students nationally through the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation. Students must go to www.coca-colaschaolrs.org to apply online.                      

APPLICANTS MUST BE:
CURRENT high school (or home-schooled) seniors attending school in the United States (or select DoD schools);
• U.S. Citizens; U.S. Nationals; U.S. Permanent Residents; Temporary Residents (in a legalization program); Refugees; Asylees; Cuban-Haitian Entrants; or Humanitarian Parolees;
• anticipating completion of high school diploma at the time of application;
• planning to pursue a degree at an accredited U.S. post-secondary institution;
• carrying a minimum 3.00 GPA at the end of their junior year of high school.

 The University of Virginia at Charlottesville: Any student that is accepted at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville will be eligible to receive the Thomas Quinn Jones Academic Scholarship in the amount of $2,000 per year and will be awarded each year if the student remains in good standing.  The university encourages everyone to apply online with the Common Application on the university undergraduate admissions website at www.virginia.edu/undergradadmission/ (9/10/10)

 E.T.S.U. Honors College Scholar Program: E.T.S.U. is currently recruiting students for the Fall 2011 University Honors Scholars Program. Students selected as University Honors Scholars will receive scholarships that cover tuition and fees, the costs of basic dormitory housing and meal plans and a semester stipend for four years. Minimum qualifications considered for admission include scores of 29+ ACT (composite) or 1280+ SAT (math and reading only), a 3.5 GPA, evidence of community and leadership activities and commitment to pursue a four-year baccalaureate degree.  Wendy's High School Heisman Scholarship Program: Senior males and females are invited to apply for this award and scholarship if they have at least a "B" GPA and participate in at least one school-sponsored sport and excel in academics, athletics, and citizenship (community activities/community service).  Any eligible student can register and begin the application process at www.wendysheisman.com . If at least 5 of our students apply, our school can qualify to for a chance to win a $500 donation. The first 41,100 students to apply will receive a gift card from Wendy's restaurants. Completed applications must be submitted online by 5:00 pm October 3, 2010. One male and one female school winner will be announced and presented a certificate at our Awards Day Ceremony. If our student moves on to the finalist competitions at the state or national level they would be eligible for an academic scholarship. (9/10/10)

Virginia Tech Pamplin Leader Award: The Pamplin Leader Award is a one-year merit-based $1,000 tuition scholarship. The scholarship will be presented annually to one senior student from each public high school in Virginia who has been accepted to, and chooses to attend, Virginia Tech. The scholarship is open to students in all majors.  We ask each high school to invite three students to apply and then send their applications to us for the final selection. An application for the Pamplin Leader Award automatically makes that student eligible to apply for the Pamplin Scholar Award in their second year at Virginia Tech. After students have been accepted to Virginia Tech by applying online at www.vt.edu/apply/ then they must also apply online for the Pamplin Leader Award at http://www.univhonors.vt.edu/html/scholarships_pamplin.html  by February 12, 2011.  U. S. Army ROTC Scholarship: Any students interested in a four year ROTC scholarship through the U.S. Army should visit www.goarmy.com for applications and information. You must be a U.S. Citizen, between the ages of 17-26, must have a minimum cumulative high school GPA of 2.5 or better, earn a high school diploma or equivalent by graduation, earn a combined score of 920 or better on the SAT (critical reading & math) or a composite score of 19 on the ACT, meet physical requirements, and agree to an eight year service commitment.  See details on their website at www.goarmy.com/rotc/scholarships.html . U. S. Navy NROTC Scholarship: The Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps Scholarship is a four year scholarship which covers most tuition, books, fees, and a monthly allowance during college months for many of the top colleges and universities in the country. To learn more about this scholarship please visit https://www.nrotc.navy.mil  for eligibility requirements and applications details. Students must have a minimum SAT score of 530 on Critical Reading and 520 on Math or ACT minimum score of 22 on English and 21 on Math. Students that are ranked in the top ten percent of their class will be considered. Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation: One year scholarships ranging from $1000 to $12,500 are awarded annually and are limited to undergraduate studies at accredited educational/technical institutions. Applicants must be the son/daughter of an active duty or reserve US Marine, US Marine who has received Honorable Discharge, Medical Discharge, or was killed while serving in the US Marine Corps, active duty or reserve US Navy Corpsman who is currently attached to a Marine unit, or was attached to a Marine unit, or US Navy Corpsman who was attached to a Marine unit and has received Honorable Discharge, Medical Discharge, or was killed while serving in the US Navy. Students must be graduating from high school in 20010 or attending college or a vocational/technical institution for the first time as an incoming freshman.  Ron Brown Scholarship: This scholarship seeks to identify African-American students that are current high school seniors who will make significant contributions to society. Applicants must excel academically, exhibit exceptional leadership potential, participate in community service activities and demonstrate financial need. The applicant must be a US citizen. Ford C. Quillen Scholarship: Each year, a Lee, Scott, and Wise Count/City of Norton graduating senior will be selected for a $500 Ford C. Quillen Scholarship. To be eligible, the graduating senior must be planning to enroll full-time in an undergraduate program at Mountain Empire Community College or the University of Virginia's College at Wise. The deadline is April 15, 2010.

 The Everet J. Flanary Scholarship is available to worthy and deserving students who plan to attend UVA-Wise.  This scholarship requires a separate application and short essay for consideration

The Cheryl Richardson Memorial Scholarship is now available to any senior that is planning on attending UVA-Wise or MECC. The deadline is April, 1

 The Ella G. Agnew Scholarship is now available in the counseling office. The Ella Agnew Scholarship is to be used by high school seniors seeking training for nursing or a field related to the medical profession. The amount of the scholarship shall be $1,000.  The Maude E. Wallace Scholarship is a general scholarship awarded to a graduating high school senior planning to further their education in ANY field. The amount of the scholarship shall be $1,000.  Alpha Natural Resources Sons & Daughters Scholarship Program: To be eligible, you must be a: Dependent (up to the age of 20 years) of active full-time employees of Alpha Natural Resources; be a high school senior who plans to enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited two-year or four-year college or university; and must complete high school in the academic year that the application is made. $1,500 scholarships will be awarded each year.  Scholarships are renewable contingent upon maintaining a 2.5 GPA and continuation of the college program.  Alpha Natural Resources Engineering Scholarship Program: To be eligible, you must be a: High school senior that plans to enroll in a full-time undergraduate engineering program at an accredited four-year college or university in one of the following engineering disciplines: Mining, Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical and must graduate from high school this academic school year.  $2,500 scholarships will awarded each year. Scholarships are renewable contingent upon maintaining a 2.5 GPA and continuation of the college program. Recipients are selected on the basis of academic record, demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities, honors, work experience, statement of goals and aspiration, unusual personal or family circumstances, and an outside appraisal.  Applications may be picked up from Mrs. Phillips.  Alpha Natural Resources Career & Technical Scholarship Program: To be eligible, you must be a: High school senior who plans to enroll in a Career & Technical Program at an accredited college and  must complete high school during the academic school year that the application is made.  $1,000 scholarships will be awarded each year.  Scholarships are renewable contingent upon maintaining a 2.5 GPA and continuation of the college program. Recipients are selected on the basis of academic record, demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities, honors, work experience, statement of goals and aspiration, unusual personal or family circumstances, and an outside appraisal.  Applications may be picked up from Mrs. Phillips.  The deadline is postmarked by March 1, 2010.

 Virginia Credit Union Members Scholarships: Applications for $62,500 in college scholarships are now available to students who are members of Virginia Credit Union. The credit union will award twenty-five $2,500 scholarships in June to members working toward their first undergraduate degree. To be eligible, a student must have joined Virginia Credit Union before September 30, 2009. Scholarship applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. .Mountain Empire Community College AIMS Scholarship: This scholarship is a two year scholarship (or up to 72 credit hours) through Mountain Empire Community College that allows qualifying students to attend college tuition free and without fees for two years at M.E.C.C. if they: 1. Earn a C or better in 17 academic courses including :4 credits of English, 4 credits of mathematics (Algebra I plus 3 additional higher math classes up through Math Analysis or Pre-calculus I), 3 credits of science (Earth, Biology, Chemistry, or Physics), 3 credits of social studies/history, 2 credits of a single foreign language or technical track courses, 1 computer related course, 2. Complete 20 hours of community service, 3. Have a 95% attendance rate for their high school career- grades 9-12, 4. And have no out-of-school suspensions. If students meet all of these qualifications, then they will be recognized as an AIMS scholar at awards ceremonies and at our graduation in addition to the two year scholarship. Students will be expected to pay for their own books always. If any scholarships are earned, those will be applied first and then AIMS funds will pick up the remaining tuition/fees but students will still be responsible for books. Students must stay full time while in college and maintain a 2.0 average GPA to continue to qualify. This scholarship may also continue for up to two additional years at UVA-Wise tuition free in order to earn a Bachelors Degree at the completion of the two years or 72 credit hours at M.E.C.C. They will be under the same requirements to continue to be eligible at UVA-Wise and must always pay for their books and fees. VSGA Scholarship Program of the Virginia Golf Foundation: The VGSA Scholarship Program of the Virginia Gold Foundation was founded to help young Virginians with an interest in golf to attend colleges and universities within the Commonwealth. Eligibility for 2010 scholarships: 1) Any Virginia high school senior in good standing who has been domiciled in Virginia since September 1, 2009 and 2) Candidates must be in good academic standing at any high school or equivalent level institution acceptable to the Virginia Golf Foundation. Consideration for a scholarship is based on the following criteria: 1) does candidate play golf or have any interest in an activity associated with golf, 2) Candidate's academic achievement, 3) Candidates character, 4) Essay to the VGF, 5) Financial need. NFIB Young Entrepreneur Award: The NFIB Young Entrepreneur Award was established to raise awareness among the nation's youth of the critical role that private enterprise and entrepreneurship play in America's economy. The scholarships recognize the students who receive them and provide financial assistance to both the students and their parents for higher education expenses. The award is, nationwide, at least 150 non-renewable scholarships in the amount of $1,000 or $2,000 each, as well as 75 four-year renewable scholarships in the amount of $1,000 per year. The award is open to high school seniors entering their freshman year for the full 2009-2010 year that demonstrate entrepreneurial spirit and initiative.  The Thomas Quinn Jones Scholarship is now available for any senior planning on attending UVA- Charlottesville. The scholarship is $2,000 per year and will be awarded each of the four years at UVA-Charlottesville total $8,000 deadline is January 1, 2010

 

 Virginia Tech PAMPLIN SCHOLARS PROGRAM FOR VIRGINIANS is now available in the counseling office. Please see Mrs. Phillips' for an application. Deadline is 2/1/10

 

AFSA American Fire Sprinkler Association: $1500 for 1st $750 for 2nd and $500 for 3rd Requirement: write a 700 to 1000 word essay on the following subject:  Write a creative, interesting and convincing essay on the history of automatic fire sprinklers and why they are important. Deadline February 1, 2010

 

Big Sun Scholarship: The Big Sun Organization is proud to be able to help young athletes succeed in their academic pursuits.  All student athletes are eligible for this award, regardless of which sport they are participating in. Southwest Burley Tobacco Scholarship Program: To qualify students must be a current resident in one of the approved 14 counties and be a former Burley tobacco grower, quota holder, producer, worker or family member holding a quota from 1998 through 2004.  Regional Scholarships.  For this years senior class students who will attend college in 2010-11, the applications will not be available until March 1, 2010.

 

The 2009-10 Lee-Jackson Educational Foundation Scholarship Program: 27 scholarships are available to qualifying students that submit outstanding analytical essays  on any aspect--positive or negative--of the career, character, or legacy of General Robert E. Lee and/or General "Stonewall" Jackson. Any juniors or seniors that are: A Virginia resident, that plan to attend a four-year accredited U.S. college, and later enroll as a full time student may apply for this essay scholarship. U. S. Army ROTC Scholarship: Any students interested in a four year ROTC scholarship through the U.S. Army should visit www.goarmy.com for applications and information. You must be a U.S. Citizen, between the ages of 17-26, must have a minimum cumulative high school GPA of 2.5 or better, earn a high school diploma or equivalent by graduation, earn a combined score of 920 or better on the SAT (critical reading & math) or a composite score of 19 on the ACT, meet physical requirements, and agree to an eight year service commitment.  See details on their website. The application deadline is January 10, 2010.

 

National Multiple Sclerosis Society Scholarship Program: This scholarship is available to high school seniors who have MS or who have a parent with MS; or high school graduates of any age who have MS or who have a parent with MS.  Awards range from $1,000 to $3,000. Ron Brown Scholar Program: Scholarships are available to academically talented, highly motivated African American students who are currently seniors in high school and plan to pursue undergraduate degrees full-time and are U. S. citizens. Applications are available at www.ronbrown.org and may be submitted for two separate contest deadlines on November 1, 2009 and January 9, 2010

 

Harry F. Byrd Leadership Award Scholarship:  Our principal may nominate one graduating senior who will be selected through our scholarship committee to compete for this scholarship and leadership award of $10,000. The student nominated should exhibit excellence in academics, leadership, character, and duty. Any student that wishes to be considered for nomination by the scholarship committee must submit their name to Ms. Carico by October 28, 2009. The student chosen for nomination must complete the nomination application and paperwork by the deadline of November 13, 2009.

KFC Colonel's Scholars: This program is dedicated to assisting students with financial need who plan to pursue a bachelor's degree at a public institution within their state of legal residence. To qualify, a student must graduate from high school before 8/2010, have maintained a minimum 2.75 GPA, enroll in a public, in-state college or university pursuing a bachelor's degree, and be a US citizen or permanent resident. Students can complete their application at www.kfcscholars.org and it will be available between December 1, 2009 and February 10, 2010.

Washington Crossing Foundation: Scholarships are available for US residents, and are planning a career in government service. Interested students are invited to write a one page essay stating why he or she plans a career in government service including any inspiration derived from the leadership of George Washington in his famous crossing of Delaware. The essay must be accompanied by a recommendation from the high school principal or guidance counselor. The Principals' Leadership Award: The National Association of Secondary School Principals and Herff Jones presents the Principal's Leadership Award which is a national scholarship competition for seniors. Please visit www.principals.org/PLA for rules and to download applications. Mr. Lee, our principal, must nominate one student from our school, so if you are interested in applying, please see Ms.Carico by October 21st. If you are selected form nomination, you will notified by October 26th. The actual application is due by December 4, 2009.

 

Juniors and seniors are invited to visit www.Fastweb.com to explore their free scholarship matching services. It matches you with scholarships that you meet the qualifications for.  It has a national database of scholarships, some of which may not have been shared with or advertised through our school.  All scholarships that we have access to and are notified of will be advertised on this school scholarship webpage. Each scholarship program will either send hard copies of applications to our school for distribution or it may require an online application be filled out and/or include a website where you may find more information. If a scholarship is not listed on our school webpage, then we have not been contacted by that program and permitted to distribute copies of that specific application.

 

 


Oh, the Places You’ll Go! College Scholarship Program: Applicants must be in the 12th grade and graduate in 2010, age 21 or less. One winner will be selected nationally and win a $5,000 scholarship. See Mrs. Salyers for an application form which must be mailed with an original literary composition submitted in essay or memoir format. Information can  be found at www.ohtheplaces.org. Applications and literary entries must be mailed by February 15, 2010.
